Consulting Online Store Creation: Plan Product Categories and the Buying Journey Consulting Online Store Creation: Plan Product Categories and the Buying Journey

When planning an online store, decide how customers will find products and move toward a purchase before choosing a template. Categories organized only around the seller’s perspective, or product pages that do not make the next step clear, can make it harder for visitors to find what they want. Use the hypothetical example below to shape a structure around your own products.

Make two decisions first

Organize products around the criteria customers actually use to compare them. Start with distinct criteria such as purpose, product type, or intended recipient. Avoid forcing every product into several menus. Use category names customers will recognize, and make sure you can explain where each product belongs.

Write out the buying journey in a simple sequence: choose a category → compare products → review a product page → select options → add to cart or buy. Product pages should clearly show price, options, stock, shipping information, and the next action. Payments, social login, domains, and shipping each require setup, so check these separately from building the site.

Hypothetical example: a handmade soap shop

**Before:** The menus were “Popular,” “New,” “Gifts,” and “Other,” and the same soap was listed in multiple sections. Scent and size were buried in a paragraph on each product page, while shipping information was far below the purchase button. Customers could not easily compare products by scent, and it was unclear what to do after choosing an option.

**After:** The main categories became “Face,” “Body,” and “Gift Sets,” while scent and weight were presented as product options. The top of each product page showed its purpose and price, followed by option selection, a stock check, and the purchase button. Shipping information was moved closer to the purchase area. This is a hypothetical example: adapt the actual categories to your product range and the way your customers choose products.

Gather materials before building

Collect product names and descriptions, photos, prices, options, stock details, and shipping terms in one place. Assign one primary category to each product and note questions customers commonly ask. Do not fill gaps with guesses; flag information that still needs confirmation. You can get started with TalkTalkMySite’s no-code templates, AI chat, and visual editing without coding or design experience. However, the owner still needs to review the content, layout, and business details.

Check before publishing, then take the next step

  • Are category names written in language customers use?
  • Can shoppers find the price, options, stock, and shipping details on each product page?
  • Is the next step toward purchase clear?
  • Have you checked payment, social login, domain, and shipping setup?
  • Have you tested the menus and buying journey on a phone screen?

TalkTalkMySite Basic is for websites, Standard is for stores, and Premium is for multilingual sites. Choose the format you need, test the categories and buying journey with a few real products, and revise anything that feels unclear. Search rankings and sales are not guaranteed, and neither unlimited free use nor an error-free result is promised.
