Check Search Crawling After Building a Nonprofit Website

Follow a practical sequence to see whether search engines can find and crawl a nonprofit’s new website. Compare a labelled hypothetical case before and after corrections, then use the checklist for your next review.

Publishing a website does not mean it will appear in search results immediately. Check three things separately: whether visitors can open the site, whether a search engine can access its pages, and whether the important page information is reflected properly in search results. Being crawled and ranking highly are different outcomes.

1. Check the public site and its key pages

Open the site in a browser while logged out. Check not only the home page but also important pages such as About, Activities, and Support. Make sure links work and that text and buttons remain readable on a phone. Look for any private or preview setting left over from pre-launch checks, and confirm that menu links do not point to old addresses.

Before asking a search engine to check the site, prepare the exact website address. It is helpful to list the home page and each important page you want indexed separately. You may need to verify site ownership and submit page crawl requests through the search engine’s webmaster tool. Interfaces and procedures vary, so follow the tool’s current instructions.

2. Check crawl status by page address

Searching for the organization’s name and seeing whether a result appears is not enough. Use the webmaster tool to review the site’s crawl status and any issue notices, then inspect the home page and important pages individually. Submitting a request does not guarantee that crawling will be completed immediately. If you see an error, first check that the page is public, its address is correct, and visitors can reach it through the menu or internal links. Fix the issue and submit the page for review again.

Review page titles and descriptions yourself as well. Rather than repeating only the organization’s name, make sure the title and page text match what the page actually offers. An Activities page should make clear what activities it describes; a Support page should clearly explain the relevant ways to support the organization. The organization cannot fully control the wording or order shown in search results.

Hypothetical example: “Village Sharing Group,” before and after

Before the changes, Village Sharing Group had published its website but saw no search result, so it repeated the organization’s name in the title. A closer check revealed that the Support page was private and the Activities page still had the title “Page 2.” Repeatedly submitting crawl requests would not fix either problem.

After the changes, the group made the Support page public and linked to it from the menu and home page. It updated the Activities page title and text to reflect the actual activities, then inspected the addresses of the home, Support, and Activities pages individually and requested crawling again. Search results may still take time to reflect changes, so the group planned to check the status and any error notices again. This is a hypothetical example to illustrate the process; it does not promise visibility or rankings.

Post-launch checklist and next step

  • [ ] Key pages open when logged out and on a phone.
  • [ ] Private pages, incorrect addresses, and broken menu links have been checked.
  • [ ] Titles and page text on the home page and important pages match their actual content.
  • [ ] The webmaster tool has been checked for crawl status and issue notices for each address.
  • [ ] After making corrections, each affected page has been inspected again, and a date for the next review is set.

TalkTalkMySite offers no-code templates, AI chat, and visual editing, so owners can get started without coding or design experience. However, owners must check the content, layout, and organization details themselves. Basic is for a website, Standard for a store, and Premium for multilingual use. Payments, social login, domains, and shipping require setup. The service does not guarantee free unlimited use, error-free creation, search rankings, or fundraising results. As a next step, inspect the published home page and its crawl status, fix any issues you find, and recheck the important pages one by one.
