Decide what visitors should do next

Nonprofit Website Creation starts not with a polished mission statement, but with deciding what visitors should learn and what action they should take. Choose one high-priority action—such as donating, volunteering, or asking about a program—and make it easy to find on the home page and relevant pages. If several actions receive equal emphasis, first-time visitors may not know where to begin.

Gather the essentials before building: the organization’s exact name and description, service area, each program’s intended audience and schedule, contact details, and photos you have permission to publish. If you plan to accept donations or collect applications, review payment and form setup, as well as how information will be handled. Putting text on a website does not automatically create a working payment or application process.

Check clear writing and accessibility together

Keep each sentence focused on one main idea. Explain abbreviations and replace abstract language or internal jargon with words your visitors use. Make links understandable on their own: instead of “Learn more,” try “View the food-packing volunteer schedule.” Check that text stands out from its background, text is comfortably readable, and menus and links can be reached using a keyboard. Add alternative text that describes the purpose of meaningful images. If a schedule or phone number appears only in an image, provide it as text too.

Hypothetical example: “Sharing Neighbors,” before and after

**Hypothetical example:** “Sharing Neighbors,” a local nonprofit, wants to explain its grocery-sharing program and recruit volunteers. Its draft says, “We advance community capacity-building and implement support programs for vulnerable groups.” A new visitor cannot readily tell what the organization does or whether they can take part.

A clearer version might say: “Every Saturday, we share groceries with neighbors. To help pack food, view the volunteer schedule and how to sign up.” Use “Every Saturday” only if the organization has confirmed that the schedule is accurate. Make the link specific too: “See how to sign up for food-packing volunteer shifts” is more informative than “Sign up.” Use large, high-contrast text and add concise alternative text that conveys what a grocery photo contributes to the page.

Choose a setup and check before publishing

TalkTalkMySite offers no-code templates, AI chat, and visual editing; coding or design experience is not required to get started. Basic is for a website, Standard for a store, and Premium for multilingual use. Decide which functions you need before choosing a plan. Payments, social login, domains, and shipping may require setup. AI-generated copy and visual edits are not guaranteed to be accurate or accessible, so owners must verify the content, layout, and organization details.

**Pre-publication checklist** - Can visitors comfortably read and use the text and menus on a phone? - Are the organization name, schedules, contact details, and donation or application instructions current and consistent? - Can someone predict where a link goes from its wording alone? - Have you checked image descriptions, text contrast, and keyboard navigation yourself?

Search rankings, increased donations, unlimited free use, and error-free results are not guaranteed. As a next step, choose the single most important visitor action, apply the checklist to a draft using your gathered materials, and ask someone else to read and use it on a phone before publishing.
