Getting started

A Community Website Built Around Residents’ Questions

When rebuilding an existing local community site without code, start by reviewing its addresses and content. Organize pages around residents’ common questions and prepare a pre-launch review checklist.

Review the existing site’s addresses and content first

Before building or revising a local community website, list the addresses currently in use and the pages each one leads to. Separate information that is still needed—such as announcements, group details, and participation instructions—from content that should be updated or removed, such as notices for past events. If existing links have been shared elsewhere, decide whether the new site can keep the same addresses and where visitors should go if an address changes. Do not assume that an existing address can simply be reused; check what domain connection and site configuration will require.

For each item, note who is responsible and when it was last checked. Meeting times, locations, contact details, and participation requirements deserve particular attention. Rebuilding a site does not automatically make old information accurate.

Turn visitors’ questions into a page structure

Arrange the navigation around what a first-time visitor wants to know: “Who is this community for?”, “How can I take part?”, “When is the next meeting?”, and “Where can I send a question?” Use the home page to explain the group’s purpose and how to participate. Make schedules and announcements, participation guidance, FAQs, and contact information easy to find. Rather than moving every old post, prioritize information that is still useful.

Make the next action clear on every page. A schedule page can explain how to attend and where to check for changes. Participation instructions can say what to prepare and where to ask questions. Even if recurring questions are answered in an FAQ, keep a contact route for questions that need a real person’s response.

Prepare materials before building without code

TalkTalkMySite offers no-code templates, AI chat, and visual editing. Coding or design experience is not required to get started. However, even if a tool helps draft the site, the owner must check that the content is accurate, the layout works, and business and contact details are correct. Gather a logo or representative image, current copy, schedules, contact details you intend to publish, and a person responsible for reviewing each page.

**Hypothetical example — a neighborhood book club:** The group archives or removes notices for past events, then puts the intended audience and instructions for checking the next meeting on the home page. Its “How to Participate” page explains what a first-time attendee should do, while the FAQ covers how to confirm the venue and how to ask a question. Organizers review the real schedule and contact details again before publication.

Check before publishing, then start with a manageable scope

  • Check that menus and text are readable on both phones and computers.
  • Ask the responsible person to verify dates, locations, contact details, and links.
  • Decide whether to keep the existing address and who will handle domain connection and required settings.
  • If you plan to accept applications or payments, check whether the relevant features need separate setup.
  • Consider whether you need multiple languages. Basic is for a website, Standard for a store, and Premium for multilingual use.

Online payments, social login, domains, and shipping require setup when needed. Search ranking, increased visits, or sales are not guaranteed; neither are unlimited free use or error-free results. Start by publishing a few of the most frequently needed items accurately, then use real questions from visitors to decide what to improve next.
