Image Rights, Alt Text, and Pages That Answer Visitors’ Questions

Learn how to check photo-use permissions, write useful alt text, and organize a page around the questions people ask before buying.

When planning a website, choose images and decide what visitors need to know at the same time. An attractive layout is not enough: confirm that you have permission to use each image and make essential information easy to find. No-code tools can help you get started without coding or design experience, but you remain responsible for checking the content, layout, and business details before publishing.

Check image permissions before uploading

Even a photo you took yourself may require separate consideration of people or locations shown in it. A photo found in search results is not automatically available for use. Read the provider’s terms and check whether commercial use and editing are allowed, and whether attribution is required. If the terms are unclear or you cannot confirm the permitted use, do not publish the image; choose material with clear permissions instead. Keep a record of the original file, its source, and the terms you checked so you can review them later.

Use alt text to explain an image’s role

Alt text conveys an image’s essential information to visitors who cannot see it. If an image shows a product, briefly describe the features that distinguish it. For a decorative image, avoid adding unnecessary description. Do not repeat the same wording for every image or use empty labels such as “photo.” If an image contains important text, check that the same information is also available in the page’s main content. After writing alt text, compare it with the image shown on the actual page.

Organize pages around visitors’ questions

Start by listing what a visitor wants to know. For a store, typical questions include: “What do you sell?”, “What options can I choose?”, “How do payment and shipping work?”, and “Where can I ask a question?” Use those questions to plan the layout: introduce the offering and the next action on the first screen, show product images and selection details in the product area, and put payment, shipping, and contact information in a clear guidance section. Do not present an undecided policy as final. Before publishing, make sure the information matches how the business actually operates.

Hypothetical example and pre-publication check

**Hypothetical example — handmade notebook store:** The first screen explains what the notebooks are for and how to browse them. A product page includes cover and inside-page images, along with available color choices. The owner records whether each photo was taken personally or its usage terms were checked. Alt text such as “notebook with a navy cover and ruled pages” explains a meaningful visual distinction. A separate guidance area describes payment, shipping, and contact options in line with the store’s actual practices.

Before publishing, check the permissions and source records for every photo, the accuracy of its alt text, and whether product and business details are current. Store features do not automatically configure payments, social login, domains, or shipping; set up each applicable item yourself. TalkTalkMySite offers no-code templates, AI chat, and visual editing. Basic is for a website, Standard for a store, and Premium for multilingual use. These are product distinctions, not guarantees of results. Search rankings, sales, unlimited free use, and error-free operation are not guaranteed. As a next step, write down your offering and visitors’ questions on one page, then prepare your image list and identify the permissions you need to verify.
