Salon Website Photos: Check Usage Rights and Alt Text

Before adding salon photos to your website, confirm who may use them and write alt text that describes what each image actually shows. A hypothetical salon example illustrates the before-and-after and a practical publishing checklist.

Confirm that you may use each photo

A salon website can use style photos to show its atmosphere and results, but having a copy of an image does not by itself mean you have permission to publish it. First identify whether each image was taken by you, a photographer, a staff member, or a customer. Confirm with the photographer that the photo may appear on your website and be used for promotion. If a customer’s face or other identifying features are visible, confirm the intended uses and where the image will appear, and keep a record. If permission is unclear, choose a photo that does not show the face or hold the image back.

Keep a simple record for each file: its source, photographer, confirmed scope of use, and the date you checked. This can prevent confusion when replacing images or preparing other promotional materials. Also look for other people’s faces, trademarks, or artwork inside the frame. These are practical review steps, not a legal determination of rights.

Alt text explains the image’s role

Alt text is a short description that helps people who cannot see an image, or who encounter a page where it does not load, understand its content. Describe relevant visible details such as hair length, color, and style in specific, neutral language. For a decorative image, check whether the editor lets you mark it as decorative, and avoid repeating a description already given in nearby text. Avoid vague or promotional wording such as “photo,” “beautiful hair,” or “the best color salon,” as well as lists of keywords.

Hypothetical example: before and after at “Corner Salon”

A fictional salon is preparing its website and wants to upload a color-treatment photo showing a customer’s face. Before revision, the photo is posted without a source record, and its alt text says, “The best professional hair color salon.” The text repeats an advertising claim instead of describing the image.

The owner checks whether the customer or a staff member took the photo and confirms permission to publish the image showing the customer’s face. If the permitted uses are unclear, the owner holds that photo back and selects a back-view image for which permission has been confirmed. The revised alt text reads: “A shoulder-length brown hairstyle with soft waves after coloring.” Use this wording only if it matches the actual image; change it when the hair color, length, or style differs. This is an example of descriptive text, not a substitute for checking permission or rights.

Finish the review in your editor

TalkTalkMySite offers no-code templates, AI chat, and visual editing, so you can get started without coding or design experience. The owner still needs to check image permissions, copy, layout, and business details such as opening hours and contact information. Before you begin, gather the original photos, records of sources and usage checks, draft alt text, a logo, and current business information. After editing, review the page on mobile and desktop for image cropping, accurate descriptions, and permission records before publishing.

For your next step, list every photo planned for the website and mark it “confirmed for use,” “needs checking,” or “hold.” If you need online booking or payment, or want to connect a domain, check what separate setup is required. Do not assume the tool automatically confirms image rights or guarantees an error-free result; review the site yourself before making it public.
