Sports Gear Websites: Decide What Comes First on the Homepage

You can prioritize a homepage without design experience by considering what visitors need, which products to feature, and what they should do next. See a labelled hypothetical before-and-after example for a running gear shop and a preparation checklist.

Before decorating a homepage, decide what visitors are looking for and what you want them to do. For a sports gear shop, the priority changes depending on whether the main goal is to browse featured products, find equipment for a particular sport, or contact the store. Rather than trying to show every attractive element at once, choose one primary action and place the information that supports it first.

Three criteria for setting the order

First, narrow down your main customers and their purpose. Beginners who are taking up running and members of a running club may need different products and explanations. Second, choose one product category or offer to feature first, and make sure it matches what you actually sell. Third, make the visitor’s next step clear. If the goal is to browse products, make a product-viewing button easy to find. If the goal is to start a conversation, show how to get in touch.

Start with a short headline, a sentence explaining who the products help and how, a photo of an actual product or its use, and a button indicating the next step. Do not omit details that inform a purchase decision, such as shipping or payment conditions and size guidance, but there is no need to fit every detail on the first screen. Explain those points in the sections below it.

Hypothetical example: a running gear shop, before and after

**Hypothetical example — not a real business experience or result.** “Pace Run” is an imaginary shop selling running shoes, socks, and water bottles. Before the revision, several product photos and promotional messages appeared at similar sizes. First-time visitors could not easily tell which items to look at first. One equipment photo also suggested a product the shop did not sell, so the imagery did not match the store’s offer.

After the revision, the headline became “Choose the gear you need to start running.” A photo of running shoes the shop actually carries and a “View running shoes” button moved to the front. Socks and water bottles were moved to a product section below, while size selection and shipping information were organized in product descriptions. The change was not about adding decoration; it was about reordering what customers see and checking that each message is accurate. This layout does not guarantee more purchases or a higher search ranking.

Preparation checklist

  • Write down the main customer and the primary action the homepage should prompt, in one sentence.
  • Verify the products you actually sell, their prices, sizes and options, stock, and shipping information.
  • Prepare product photos you have permission to use, and check that each image matches its description.
  • Review business details such as the business name, contact method, and opening hours.
  • Check that the headline and buttons remain easy to see on a phone screen.

TalkTalkMySite lets you start with no-code templates, AI chat, and visual editing without coding or design experience. However, a draft is not automatically accurate: owners must check the wording, layout, product information, and business details themselves. Basic is for a website, Standard is for a store, and Premium is for multilingual use. Payments, social login, domains, and shipping require setup. There is no guarantee of free unlimited use, error-free creation, search rankings, or sales results. As a next step, choose one representative product, draft the homepage around it, and review the draft using the checklist above.
