Local Retail Website Creation: Photo Rights, Alt Text, and Visitor Questions

Before using store photos, check permission and prepare useful alt text and a page answering visitor questions. This beginner’s guide includes a materials checklist and a clearly labeled hypothetical example.

Start by choosing the pages your store needs

For a local retailer, good website creation is less about the number of pages than about making important visitor information easy to find. Start with a home page, store information, products or services, visit information, and frequently asked questions. Prioritize details people check before visiting, such as opening hours, address, contact information, and parking or transit guidance. If you plan to sell online, prepare product and payment and shipping information separately; a store introduction and an online store build are not automatically the same scope.

Gather current business details, your store logo, photos you took yourself, product names and descriptions, and contact options. For photos taken by someone else or supplied by a vendor, check whether you have permission to publish them on your website and what conditions apply. Keep a record of the photographer’s permission, permitted uses, and any required attribution. An image found through search or posted on social media is not automatically free to use on your site.

Check photo permissions and alt text

For each image, confirm who took it, who holds the rights, and whether website publication and editing are allowed. If a supplier provides product photos, ask whether use on your own website is permitted. If the terms are unclear, hold off or prepare photos you took yourself. It is also prudent to check with identifiable customers or staff before publishing their photos.

Alt text communicates the essential content of an image to visitors who cannot see it or who use assistive technology. For a decorative image, avoid repeating nearby information. For an informative image, describe it briefly in a way that serves its purpose. For example, instead of “store photo,” write “Handmade soaps and price labels displayed on wooden shelves.” Do not add unverified qualities or benefits that go beyond what the image shows.

TalkTalkMySite offers no-code templates, AI chat, and visual editing, so you can start building a first version without prior coding or design experience. Treat template layouts and AI-generated wording as drafts: the owner still needs to check photo permissions, business details, copy, and page layout.

Build a page that answers visitor questions

Start your FAQ with questions customers actually ask, and answer them briefly and clearly. Topics might include opening hours and closing days, store location, parking, how to check product availability, exchange and return terms, and how to contact you. If you accept online orders, include only information you can verify about payment methods, delivery areas and costs, delivery times, and how to change an order. Update the page when your terms or details change.

**Hypothetical example — neighborhood stationery store:** The owner uses photos they took of the store entrance and popular products, but holds back a character-product image from a supplier until permission for website use is confirmed. The first page shows the address, opening hours, and contact method. The FAQ includes “Is parking available?” and “Can I call to check whether an item is in stock?” The alt text for the entrance photo reads, “Stationery shop entrance with opening hours posted beside the glass door.” This is an illustrative example; each owner must confirm their own store details and image permissions.

Check before publishing and manage the site yourself

  • Have you confirmed the photographer, permission, and permitted use for each photo?
  • Does alt text accurately describe the content of each informative image?
  • Are the opening hours, address, phone number, and FAQ answers up to date?
  • Are text and contact details easy to find on a mobile screen?
  • If you need payments, social login, a domain, or shipping, have you checked the setup requirements for each?

With TalkTalkMySite, you can visually edit text and images yourself and make updates when needed. Some features require additional preparation, so check what each plan includes, AI credit limits, and setup requirements. Templates and owner editing can help reduce custom-build and routine update costs, but no amount of savings is guaranteed. Search rankings, sales, unlimited use, and error-free results are not guaranteed either. As a next step, gather the materials you need, try the AI workspace, and build one first page—such as your store introduction or visit information—then review it yourself before publishing.
