Getting started

A nonprofit website starts with the right materials

Decide who the site serves and what visitors should do. A hypothetical environmental group shows what to gather, how to revise a draft, and what to verify before publishing.

Decide who the site is for

A nonprofit website is more useful when visitors can tell what to do next, rather than seeing only a list of facts about the organization. Choose a priority: explaining how prospective donors can give, showing volunteers how to join, or sharing updates with existing members. That choice affects the homepage message and which sections you need.

Write down three things: your main audience, one action you want them to take, and three pieces of information the site must provide. For example, if the goal is to help local residents join a stream cleanup, the activity and participation instructions may deserve more prominence than the organization’s history.

Gather materials before building

No-code templates can help beginners get started without coding or design experience. TalkTalkMySite offers templates, AI chat, and visual editing, but the owner still needs to check that the content is accurate and appropriate for the organization. Collect these materials in one folder:

  • The organization’s correct name, a short introduction, contact details, and service area
  • Recent activity photos, captions, and confirmation that the images may be published
  • Activity dates, signup instructions, and how to reach the person responsible
  • If you include donation information, wording and contact details verified by the organization
  • Existing visual materials, such as a logo or colors, and websites you want to use as references

Leave unconfirmed dates or figures out, or mark them for later rather than publishing them as facts. Do not assume AI-generated text is accurate without checking it.

Hypothetical example: “Blue Current,” before and after

Before revision, the homepage said, “A community group that loves nature,” and showed an event photo. Visitors could not easily tell where the group worked or how to take part. The menu also mixed outdated event information with current activities.

After revision, the homepage led with, “Join a neighborhood stream cleanup,” followed by the activity area and instructions for finding the next date. The menu was simplified to “About,” “Activities,” “Get involved,” and “Contact.” Captions were checked for location and activity details, and past events were separated from upcoming information. This is a hypothetical editing example, not a promise that participation will increase.

Check before publishing, then take the next step

  • Review the text, menus, and image layout on both a phone and a computer.
  • Have a responsible person verify the organization name, dates, contact details, and signup instructions.
  • If the site has a contact or signup route, submit a test entry and confirm it reaches the right place.
  • Accepting donations by card requires payment setup. Domains and social login also need their own setup.

Rather than adding every feature at once, begin with a basic site containing the essential information. Add features after you understand what visitors need. On TalkTalkMySite, Basic is for a website, Standard for a store, and Premium for a multilingual setup. Choose according to whether you need store creation or multiple languages, and account separately for payment, login, and domain setup. There is no guarantee of unlimited free use, search rankings, sales, or an error-free result. A practical first step today is to create the materials folder and write one sentence describing the homepage’s purpose.
